New information processed for 25 European countries.

Influenza activity still below or at baseline levels in all countries, although ARI or ILI activity continued to slighlty increase in some of them such as France and Belgium. Influenza A(H3N2) and B viruses are neck to neck making it impossible to forecast which one will be predominant in Europe.

Belgium ** Increasing ARI levels. So far, three laboratory confirmed cases of influenza A by antigen detection during week 01/46 and 01/49. Weeks 01/48 to 01/49 12/12/01

Denmark ** Influenza activity at seasonal levels. No detection nor isolation so far. Weeks 01/48 to 01/49 13/12/01
Finland ** Low influenza activity with sporadic A and B cases. One antigen detection of influenza B virus (week 01/48). Weeks 01/47 to 01/49
France ** Sporadic influenza activity, slightly increasing in some regions. Influenza B isolates, antigenically related to the vaccine strain B/Sichuan/379/99, were reported from various regions every week since week 01/46. A total of 3 influenza A(H3N2) isolates were reported so far. They were antigenically characterised as close to the vaccine strain A/Panama/2007/99(H3N2). Weeks 01/40 to 01/47 28/11/01

Slovak Republic ** Influenza activity at seasonal levels but slightly increased. No isolation nor detection so far. Weeks 01/47 to 01/49 11/12/01
Slovenia ** Sporadic influenza activity with detection or isolation of influenza A and B viruses. Type B was dominant week 01/49 and type A was dominant week 01/50. Weeks 01/48 to 01/50
Spain ** No sign of influenza activity. One detection/isolation of influenza A virus was reported for week 01/46. Weeks 01/46 to 01/50
Sweden ** No sign of influenza activity. Week 01/47
Switzerland ** Influenza activity at non epidemic levels. No detection nor isolation since week 01/46 when a virologically confirmed case of influenza B was reported. Weeks 01/47 to 01/49
Great Britain ** Influenza activity well below baseline levels. Sporadic detections/isolations of influenza A virus reported in England. Weeks 01/48 to 01/49
Yugoslavia New EuroGROG member. No report so far.
Elsewhere in the world
USA Widespread influenza activity was reported by Alaska, regional activity was reported by Colorado. 33 States reported sporadic activity and 14 States reported no activity. The predominant type is A (97%), the vast majority of subtyped influenza A strains belong to the A(H3N2) subtype (30 A(H3N2) versus 2 A(H1N1)). Week 01/49
